General Running / Marathon Training

Posted by on Thursday, August 12, 2004 (PST)

I've been plagued by a pain in my hip flexors, and stretching doesn't seem to help very much. My hip flexors become painful after about a week of consistent running. Then they take a week to get to where I can run again. The pain keeps coming back, and it stops me from running. Any ideas?
Generally, having a tight hip flexor is a symptom of a repetitive overuse strain of the sartorius muscle, which is the longest quadricep muscle in your thigh. The sartorius muscle is both a hip flexor and a knee flexor. An overuse injury is a repetitive trauma that overwhelms the tissue's ability to repair itself. Stretching, icing and resting will usually have you back in action within a short time. However, if the pain persists after a period of rest, you should have it checked out by your doctor. Other factors that can cause hip flexor pain are weak hamstrings, hill training, worn-out shoes, an open growth plate (usually in teenagers) and incorrect biomechanics.
